Senior staff unions across Ghana’s public universities have declared an indefinite nationwide strike, citing the government’s persistent failure to honour a legally binding agreement signed six months ago.

The unions involved include the Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG).

The strike, effective immediately, was announced by SSA-UoG National Chairman George Ansong during a press briefing at the University of Ghana campus on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. He emphasized that the decision was taken after numerous attempts to get the government to act on agreed terms that affect members’ welfare and working conditions.

“Despite numerous dialogues, reminders, and extended timelines, the government has continually reneged on its commitments, thereby undermining the pleasant cooperation that should exist between both parties,” he stated.

He also hinted that the strike is not an act of defiance but a response to a culture of broken promises that has left members feeling betrayed.

Mr Ansong emphasised their duty to defend their rights and uphold the integrity of agreements designed to protect their welfare and that of the broader public. However, he said the strike had become necessary due to the government’s breach of trust.

“We understand the potential inconvenience this action may cause, and we do not think that likely. However, the burden of this disruption lies with the government’s consistent breach of trust and failure to act in good faith,” he added.

The leader called on the public to stand in solidarity with them as they take this principled stand.

“Let this strike send a clear message: agreements must be respected, and commitments must be honored,” he urged.

He concluded by stating, “Until the government fulfills its part of the agreement, our strike will continue indefinitely. We will not back down until justice is served.”

The strike action is expected to have widespread implications across the education and administrative sectors in Ghana, as the senior staff seek urgent attention to their grievances. The associations have called on the government to prioritise dialogue and resolve the issues promptly to restore normalcy.
