The ExtraCECI Project, a UK-funded initiative, has been launched in Ghana to revolutionize HIV care. The project brings together a team of experts, including healthcare professionals, researchers, and community advocates, to deliver comprehensive, holistic care to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).
According to Dr. Commey, one of the project’s key stakeholders, “The ExtraCECI Project marks a significant shift in our approach to HIV care. We’re moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach and towards a more personalized, patient-centered model.” Dr. Commey emphasized the importance of community-based care, noting that “by working closely with local communities, we can create a supportive environment that promotes adherence to treatment, disclosure, and social support.”
Dr. Mary Abboah-Offei, the project’s lead researcher, also highlighted the project’s innovative approach. “Our goal is to deliver comprehensive, holistic care that addresses the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of PLWHA,” she explained. Dr. Abboah-Offei emphasized the importance of empowering patients to take an active role in managing their condition and making informed decisions about their care.
The ExtraCECI Project is built on the principles of patient-centered care, which prioritizes the needs and preferences of individuals living with HIV. By working closely with local communities and healthcare providers, the project aims to create a supportive environment that promotes overall well-being.
Mamaga Mumbede, Enkoso Hemaa the 1st, a respected HIV advocate, shared her personal experience living with HIV. “As I navigated the complexities of HIV care, I realized the importance of comprehensive and holistic support,” she said. Mamaga emphasized the need for care that addresses the physical, emotional, and social needs of individuals living with HIV.
The ExtraCECI Project marks a significant step towards transforming HIV care in Ghana. By prioritizing person-centered care and community-based support, the project aims to improve the lives of PLWHA and contribute to a more effective national response to the epidemic.
With its innovative approach and commitment to comprehensive care, the ExtraCECI Project has the potential to make a lasting impact on the lives of PLWHA in Ghana. As the project progresses, its findings and outcomes are expected to inform policy and practice, ultimately contributing to a more comprehensive and effective national response to HIV/AIDS.
