Educationist Nii Armah Addy has cautioned against the frequent renaming of public universities, stressing the potential impact on their identity, credibility, and long-term reputation.
Speaking on Radio Univers’ Campus Exclusive on Tuesday, May 6, Mr. Addy underscored the importance of maintaining continuity in university branding, arguing that consistent naming plays a crucial role in institutional marketing and public trust.
According to Mr. Addy, governments should refrain from renaming institutions they did not build.
“What you do not create, you do not name! A name embodies the identity of an institution. Constantly changing it can damage the institution’s image, disrupt continuity, and if not properly handled, may signal the beginning of its decline.”
Mr. Addy emphasized that name changes must be approached with caution, noting that poor transitions could erode public confidence and weaken the heritage associated with long-standing educational institutions.
