The President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, has referred the 2020 and 2024 election violence report he ordered to be prepared by the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno to prepare to the Office of Attorney General and Ministry of Justice for legal review.
The development comes on the back of the report being submitted to him at the Presidency today, July 23, by the Inspector General of Police for subsequent action.
The report details the various skirmishes and disturbances that took place in the 2020 and 2024 Elections, which led to some injuries and deaths in the country, which has generated scrutiny from the general public.
The clashes led to 8 deaths in the 2020 Elections, whilst 3 fatalities occurred in the 2024 polls held last year.
The compilation of the issues captured in the report was at the instance of the President, who directed the Police hierarchy to carry out the exercise for governmental action.
The process is the first step to ensuring accountable and equitable policing in election years and to promote transparency on how law enforcement powers are used by officers in their line of duty.
The referral to the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice is to seek legal remedies in the coming days to check abuse of state coercive power and to recommend sanctions to those who might have gone overboard in the use of deadly force in such clashes.
The John Mahama-led administration has served notice to uphold the rule of law and promote accountable governance through the established institutions of state as part of the country’s democratic revolution.
