The Director of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD), Peter Ablansah, has apologised to the University of Ghana student body over the poor lighting conditions on campus, particularly in the northern and southern sectors.
His apology follows growing concerns about the large number of non-functional streetlights on campus, which many students believe pose a serious threat to their safety.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers on Monday, July 14, the director acknowledged the issue and assured the university community that steps are being taken to address the problem.
”Let me first take this opportunity to apologise to the student body and the entire university community for the dark spots that students are complaining about. We are actually aware, and we are currently working to resolve it. Plans are far advanced, and I’m hoping this week those lights will all be fixed.”
Ablansah also urged students and other members of the university community to prioritise their personal safety. While he noted the presence of campus security, he emphasised that individual caution remains critical.
”We have our security service on campus. They are present, although the numbers may not be large enough to cover every area. But their role is to protect staff and students,” he said.
”However, security starts with the individual. So, we encourage students to avoid moving alone at night and to stay in groups when it’s necessary to go out late. As we work to fix all the dark spots on campus, we’re also urging students to avoid late-night movements unless absolutely necessary.”
With the assurances given by the PDMSD Director, Radio Univers will remain poised to provide timely updates on the streetlight repairs and any further developments related to this story.
