Scholarship Secretariat: NUGS demands payment of stipends, fees for Ghanaian students abroad

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has reiterated its call on the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat for the payment of stipends and fees by for stranded Ghanaian students on scholarship abroad.

This was broadcasted through a statement released by NUGS on the 18th of December, 2023, which was addressed to the Scholarship Secretariat.

In the statement, NUGS explained that various complaints have been placed before them due to the Scholarship Secretariat’s failure to pay the stipends and fees of Ghanaian students under its scheme, currently studying abroad.

NUGS listed some of the challenges the students were facing in their various institution due to the failure of the payment of the fees in question, which included difficulties with visa renewal, stress and inability to obtain study certificates due to outstanding fees.

“The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has recently been inundated with numerous complaints from our members in the Diaspora regarding the non-payment of fees and stipends by the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat. Several students under the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat are currently facing significant challenges due to the delay in receiving their fees and stipends. This has created a ripple effect, with graduates being unable to obtain their certificates due to outstanding fees. Additionally, many students are grappling with difficulties in renewing their visas, causing undue stress and uncertainty. “

NUGS  also revealed that various attempts had been made at contacting the Secretariat, with what they described as ‘persistent difficulties’, constantly obstructing their appeal from being heeded to. There was emphasis on the urgency of the situation with citations of academic pursuits and well-being of such students being at stake.

“Despite numerous attempts to engage with the Scholarship Secretariat, NUGS has regrettably encountered persistent difficulties in communication and resolution. The urgency of the matter cannot be overstated, as the academic pursuits and well-being of our students are at stake.”

NUGS called for the immediate payment of outstanding fees and stipends of these students to facilitate and alleviate their current situation. Stakeholders were also called to recognize the situation at hand whilst supporting the students by mounting pressure on the secretariat for the payment of outstanding fees and stipends.

“NUGS earnestly appeals to the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat to promptly address this matter by expediting the payment of fees and stipends for our students in the Diaspora. This crucial financial support is indispensable for the academic progress and overall welfare of our members. We call on all stakeholders involved to recognize the pressing nature of this issue and collaborate to ensure that the dues owed to students are settled without further delay.”
