UG marks 75th Anniversary with Islamic Prayer Session

As part of the University’s 75th-anniversary celebration, the University of Ghana organized an Islamic prayer session at the Legon Central mosque.

The event, which was held on Friday 11th August, 2023 at 2:00 pm, brought together a diverse array of attendees to commemorate this significant milestone.

The program commenced with an open Qur’an recitation by Ghana Muslims Student Association (GMSA) through Imam Hassan Saeed, setting a spiritual tone for the gathering.

The occasion was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, which included the spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Arimiyaw Shuaib. The  Sheikh delivered a short sermon that resonated with the audience, underscoring the importance of unity and faith.

Amidst the esteemed guests was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, who took the opportunity to reflect on the University’s remarkable journey over the past 75 years. She highlighted the institution’s impact across various sectors of the country, citing the achievements of UG alumni in diverse sectors such as economics and politics.

Following this address, a heartwarming presentation of an anniversary cloth took place, symbolizing the unity and shared history of the University’s community. The ceremony culminated in the cutting of an anniversary cake, fostering a sense of camaraderie and celebration among the attendees.

During the event, the University’s Imam, Imam Baba, offered prayers and took a moment to recount the University’s mosque’s history. The occasion also revealed a promising commitment from the Managing Director for Japan’s Motors, Hajj Salim Kalmouni, who promised to provide the University ummah with a state-of-the-art mosque. The mosque is set to encompass various facilities, including a conference hall, a lecture hall, and a library, embodying a vision for enhanced community and learning.

The program reached its zenith with a vote of thanks delivered by the GMSA Ladies Wing President, Hussein Habibata Maltiti. Her gratitude extended to all those who contributed to the success of the anniversary celebration, acknowledging the collective effort that made the event memorable. The closing prayer, led by Imam Col.(Rtd.) Umar Sanda, provided a spiritual conclusion to the proceedings, invoking blessings and well wishes for the University’s continued journey.
