Renowned Ghanaian musician and entrepreneur, Okyeame Kwame, has urged students of the University of Ghana to remain focused on their studies as they embark on their academic journey.

Speaking at an event organized by the School of Languages (Francaise Maison) on February 3, 2025, where he was a guest speaker, Okyeame Kwame emphasized the importance of dedicating one’s time to learning rather than being swayed by distractions such as social media and relationships.

“As you are young and you get the chance to be in an institution, just focus on learning. Do not preoccupy your brain with romance and social media—those things that will distract you from going for gold. Spend your time acquiring knowledge, and afterward, it will give you the opportunity to do more,” he advised.

The award-winning rapper also addressed the negative perceptions some students hold toward academic excellence, particularly those who strive to graduate with a first-class degree. He debunked the notion that working hard for academic success is unnecessary, highlighting the numerous benefits that come with excelling in school.

“For example, I run a travel and tour company, and we facilitate study-abroad opportunities. A year’s tuition at a second-tier university in the UK costs around 35,000 pounds. However, students who graduate with first-class honors often secure scholarships that allow them to study for free—and in some cases, they even receive financial stipends. Yet, some people discourage others by saying, ‘Are you from a poor home? Why are you studying so hard? First-class is not important.’ No! That is the wrong mindset. Take full advantage of the opportunity given to you. Your career—whether in working, teaching, or retirement—will be shaped by how seriously you take this phase of your life,” he stated.

Okyeame Kwame’s remarks resonated with many students in attendance, inspiring them to re-evaluate their priorities and make the most of their time at the university.
