Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will continue to remain in office following the Minority’s failure to attain required number of votes, needed to secure the censure motion filed against him.
The motion, which was debated on Thursday, December 8, and subsequently voted on, had only the Minority members, 136 MPs in total being present to vote.
Legislators who participated in the vote of no confidence on Thursday did not reach the two-thirds threshold prescribed in Parliamentary Standing Orders; hence Mr. Ofori-Atta’s survival.
This was because the Majority in Parliament, who were against the process, boycotted the voting after a fierce debate.
The debate was based on the report submitted by an eight-member committee constituted by the Speaker of Parliament to probe the vote of censure moved by the Minority in Parliament.
The Minority caucus filed a motion of censure against the Finance Minister, accusing him of mismanagement of the economy, financial recklessness, conflict of interest, and gross mismanagement of the economy.
