The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a week ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release all withheld 2024 WASSCE results or face a nationwide protests
Speaking at a media briefing, NUGS President Daniel Korley cautioned that failure to fulfill their requests would lead to extensive protests.
“Education is a fundamental right, and WAEC must uphold fairness, transparency, and accountability. The integrity of WAEC is at risk if students and the general public lose trust in its impartiality.
He also urged for urgent institutional reforms within WAEC to avert future injustices against students
“We demand prompt reforms to rectify these injustices. If WAEC neglects to act, NUGS will amplify this issue through legal and advocacy avenues, including pursuing judicial intervention. We encourage all students to remain composed but determined in asserting their rights. NUGS stands with every student impacted by WAEC’s actions, and we will not rest until justice is achieved,” he stated
Furthermore, NUGS condemned the practice of nullifying entire results for students found guilty of misconduct in a single subject, contending that only the impacted paper should be annulled. The union also bemoaned the absence of a proper appeal process for students to contest WAEC’s decisions.
“It’s either you have cancelled the results or you have released it. And even if they have cancelled it, the people should have heard it. Even after the cancellation, they should be able to appeal. And also those whose entire results have been cancelled for isolated cases of malpractice, that should be replaced immediately with this particular exam, not subsequent ones.”
According to NUGS, these complaints were formally conveyed in a letter to WAEC dated January 2, 2025, but the council has yet to reply favorably.
“They should release all the results within a week. Whatever investigations they are doing, they should conclude within a week. Because we wrote to them as far back as January 2nd. And from January 2nd till now is over a month. They should have enough time to have reviewed all these results by now!”
