The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) held its first meeting of the 58th Administration on January 10, 2025, where key decisions were made to address pressing student issues and shape the future of the education sector in Ghana.

According to a communiqué released on January 11, 2025, and signed by NUGS National President Daniel Korle Botchway, the NEC focused on several resolutions aimed at long-term growth, improved governance, and tackling financial challenges in education.

One major decision was the establishment of a committee to draft a Five-Year Development Plan for NUGS. The plan is intended to serve as a strategic guide, ensuring the union’s sustainable growth and effective representation of students over the next five years.

The NEC approved the formation of a Constitutional Review Committee. This committee will examine the NUGS Constitution, with the aim of adopting a revised version by the 59th NUGS year. The updated constitution will ensure the union’s governance structure aligns with modern standards and meets the evolving needs of students.

Addressing the financial challenges facing the education sector, the NEC decided to propose sustainable funding solutions. A motion will be presented at the upcoming Central Committee meeting to secure funding for critical areas such as Teacher Unions, school infrastructure, and programs like Free SHS and the School Feeding Program. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial pressures affecting students and the education system.

The ongoing impasse between the government and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) was also discussed. The NUGS President updated the NEC on steps taken to engage with CETAG leadership and Ministry of Education officials. The committee urged the government to fulfill its promise of migrating qualified CETAG members to the University Salary Structure by the end of January 2025, and tasked the NUGS President with continuing dialogue to resolve the issue.

Concerns from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) about insufficient funding for Senior High School feeding programs were also addressed. This issue was linked to broader discussions on sustainable funding for education and the continuation of the Free SHS policy. The NEC emphasized the importance of adequate resources for the feeding program’s success.

The introduction of a Sexual Harassment Policy (SHP) and two youth-centered initiatives— the Youth Advisory Board and the Youth Handbook on Values— were also key topics of discussion. The SHP seeks to foster safer learning environments by ensuring that educational institutions remain free from discrimination and harassment. Meanwhile, the Youth Advisory Board and the Youth Handbook on Values aim to boost youth engagement in policymaking and encourage ethical conduct among young people.

The National Executive Committee of NUGS is the union’s governing body, made up of elected student leaders who oversee operations, make decisions, and represent student interests.
