The Minister for the Interior has, following a recommendation from the Upper East Regional Security Council and through an Executive Instrument, adjusted the curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and surrounding areas in the Upper East Region. The new curfew, now running from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., took effect on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

This development comes in the wake of violent clashes in the area, which reportedly led to casualties, injuries, and damage to property, including the private residence of a public figure.

In a statement released while on official duty abroad, Mr. Mahama Ayariga expressed grave concern over the recent violence, the tragic loss of life, and an attempt to set fire to his home.

He pointed to rising frustration among the youth over delays in resolving the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in Bawku and also cited alleged misconduct by some security personnel as contributing factors to the unrest.
