The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) has obtained ISO 15189:2022 accreditation, reinforcing its position as a leading biomedical research and diagnostic center in Ghana and on the global stage.
This comes after a successful accreditation assessment last year, leading to the institute receiving accreditation for five out of its nine departments in January this year.
The certificate was officially unveiled during the opening ceremony of the institute’s Quality Week on February 24, 2025, themed “Sustaining a Quality Culture.”
While delivering her opening remarks, the director of NMIMR, Prof. Dorothy Yeboah-Manu highlighted the importance of the ISO accreditation, stating that it demonstrates the institute’s dedication to quality and compliance with global standards to serve its stakeholders effectively.
“Today, we celebrate our accreditation under ISO 15189:2022. As a premier biomedical institution in the sub-region, this certification places us on a higher platform of international recognition. It demonstrates our commitment to quality, adherence to global standards, and dedication to building trust among stakeholders.”

Prof. Yeboah-Manu further highlighted the significance of Quality Week in advancing the institute’s mission.
“As a research facility, we recognize that quality is the foundation of our work. It ensures the accuracy of our findings, the reliability of our laboratory processes, and the overall impact of our research on global development.
She also admonished the staff of NMIMR not become complacent after the accreditation but continue to strive for higher efficiency and improve the quality management of the institute, while assuring management’s support.
The Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Murtala Mohammed Ibrahim, who served as the guest speaker, congratulated Noguchi on this milestone and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting NMIMR’s research and enhancing its role in public health.

Speaking to Univers News, NMIMR’s Quality Manager, Mrs. Susan Adu-Amankwah, highlighted the significance of the ISO accreditation, emphasizing that it strengthens the institute’s credibility and demonstrates its competence in public health research.
“We went through a rigorous accreditation process and selected ISO 15189 because it focuses on the capacity and competence of medical laboratories. This certification affirms that our diagnostic work meets international standards and that we are well-equipped to handle public health emergencies.”
NMIMR’s ISO 15189:2022 accreditation underscores its commitment to excellence in biomedical research and diagnostics, further solidifying its role in shaping public health in Ghana and beyond.
