The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has revealed  that the heavy downpour that hit parts of Accra yesterday, May 18 did not result in any heavy casualties per its official records.

In a media interaction, the Chief Disaster Management Officer, Mohammed Jafaru intimated that the agency received a huge amount of distress calls from residents in areas such as Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie.

In response, the Emergency Response Team from NADMO has been deployed across the affected areas to help with rescue and relief efforts.

“After yesterday’s heavy downpour, we have received loads of calls from areas such as Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie for help – and such we have deployed our men on the ground for rescue and relief operations. Per my official records, we have not recorded any casualties thus far,” Mr Jafaru added.

The severe flood has been attributed to lack of appropriate drainage infrastructure and poor sanitation which has  long been the challenge across such areas once the rains set in.

“Most of the problems that lead to heavy flooding in such areas include poor drainage infrastructure and sanitation management culture and in other cases, engineering defects are to blame for the damage once there is heavy rain”, he explained.

NADMO has cautioned the general public to be vigilant during periods of intense rainfall and stay away from flood-prone areas to protect lives and properties.
