The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has expressed deep appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his pivotal role in uncapping the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), a significant step aimed at enhancing healthcare accessibility across Ghana.

In a budget presentation made on March 11, 2025, by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson in Parliament, the announcement was made regarding the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL). He stated, “Mr. Speaker, we have uncapped the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL).”

A total of GH¢9.93 billion has been allocated for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which will be directed towards:
1. Claim payments
2. Essential medicines
3. Vaccine payments
4. Free Primary Healthcare
5. The Ghana Medical Care Trust (MahamaCares)
6. Addressing the USAID financing shortfall.

In a statement released on the same day, NHIA CEO Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe hailed the decision as a landmark achievement that aligns with the government’s commitment to providing sustainable and accessible healthcare for all Ghanaians.

The uncapping of the NHIF will result in increased funds to enhance healthcare services, broaden coverage, and improve efficiency within the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This initiative not only fulfills a critical campaign promise but also showcases the administration’s commitment to healthcare reform.
