University of Ghana’s Sports Directorate has announced in a press statement the closure of the University of Ghana (UG) Main Field and Athletic Oval for maintenance work until the end of October.

The closure was inplemented to prepare for the forthcoming African Games as Ghana will be host for the Sports event.

Thus, Accra will be the host city for the biggest sporting festival on the continent and it’s expected to give Ghana more importance with their hosting rights. UG will serve as one of the centers to host some of the disciplines; a rugby pitch, warm up pitch, games village (the diaspora halls) and the UG stadium are some of the facilities to host the athletes and other participants of the African Games next year.

“We wish to inform the University Community that the UG Main Field (opposite the Basic School) and Athletic Oval are under renovation till the end of October.”

“The two spaces are therefore construction sites and are not to be used for any purpose,” the statement explained, signed by the Sports Directorate Dorector, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu.

The African Games (Accra 2023) is expected to draw more than 5 billion viewers from around the world, making it potentially the biggest event in the competition’s history. Ghana has competed in the continental games since 1965, but this is the first time it has had the honour of hosting the competitions. It is scheduled to kick off from March 8 – March 23, 2024.

Here is the statement from the Sports Directorate.
