The National Communications Authority (NCA) has notified MultiChoice Ghana of its intention to suspend the company’s licence to operate in the country, following a directive from the Minister of Communications issued last week.
The move stems from a public dispute between the Minister and the pay-TV operator over subscription pricing, despite what the government says is an improvement in Ghana’s economic indicators under the new Mahama-led administration.
In a statement dated August 7, the NCA reminded the operators of DStv services in Ghana that they have 30 days to submit a plan showing how they intend to comply with the Minister’s directive to reduce subscription fees. The plan, the regulator said, must reflect recent economic stability and ease the financial burden on consumers.
“The National Communications Authority has served MultiChoice Ghana with notice of its intent to suspend its operational licence after 30 days, pursuant to Section 13 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), should the company fail to present and implement a workable plan to reduce its subscription fees,” the statement read.
The NCA further instructed MultiChoice Ghana to respond within the specified period and provide reasons why the proposed regulatory action should not take effect.
