Medeama SC has claimed its first-ever BetPawa Premier league title this season.
It is the first time in 47 years that a team from the Western part of the country have laid hands on a league title, with he last club to do so being Sekondi Hasaacas in the 1976/77 season.
The Tarkwa-based side Medeama SC broke the jinx after securing 60 points to clinch the BetPawa Premier League title for the first time in their history. After 34 rounds of matches, the Yellow and Mauves recorded 18 wins, 6 draws and 10 losses.
Medeama earned a victory of 3-0 against Tamale City FC in the final game of the season at the Tarkwa Akoon Park. An early goal from Joshua Agyemang and a brace from Jonathan Sowah were enough to hand Medeama the victory and their historic league triumph.
Medeama ended the season 5 points above second-placed Aduana FC, and 6 points above third-placed Bechem United, with Asante Kotoko at the fourth place.
Head coach of Medeama Sc, Evans Adotey was excited that their mission for the season has come to a fruitful climax.
”I was brought here on a mission, it was halfway through the season and the mission was to make sure Medeama wins the title. Lo and behold my mission is fulfilled, that is why you can see Im highly excited.”
Coach Adotey proceeded to dedicate the league victory to his predecessors who started the season before taking over.
”Nobody should blame David Duncan, nobody should blame Umar (Rabi). They did a yeoman’s job. They started and I came in halfway. They gathered some points and then I also continued until this final day. So the congratulations is not only meant for me alone, it’s a collective congratulations. Duncan is part, Umar is part and the entire technical team.”
Board chairman of Medeama, Dr Tony Aubyn recounted the difficult seasons they’d endured in the past as well a difficult start to this season.
”We have attempted that [premier league] on two major occasions, all occasions were truncated, so this is a splendid feeling for us. Nothing good comes, it’s been very tough we started very well and at a point in time we were slumbering, we were just going down and we had to reorganise and get back on track”.
Tamale City’s loss to Medeama meant the end of the road for the Cityzens after just a season in the top flight. FA Cup finalist King Faisal bowed out of the league after finishing 17th on the log. These two teams join Kotoku Royals as the three teams relegated from the Betpawa premier league. Bibiani Gold Stars’ Abednego Tetteh finished the season with 18 goals for his side, finishing top of the goalscorers chart beating Hafiz Wontah Konkoni with 3 goals.
