President John Mahama has inaugurated a nine-member transitional committee to oversee the formal transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the management of the University of Ghana.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate teaching, research, and clinical services within a single institutional structure, aimed at improving efficiency and enhancing the quality of healthcare and education.
Speaking at the launch, President Mahama noted that this is not merely a handover but a deliberate effort to merge healthcare with academia, emphasising the goal of establishing a world-class hospital that will serve Ghana and beyond.
“This is not a mere administrative action. It is a strategic alignment designed to promote synergy between clinical service delivery, teaching, and research; to enhance institutional efficiency through harmonised leadership and resource management; to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among medical professionals, researchers, and academics; and most importantly, to create a truly world-class teaching hospital that meets the needs of Ghana and the wider West African sub-region,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, also assured that management will do everything within their capacity to ensure a smooth and successful transition.
“This is just the beginning of the process, but as we go through it, we pledge our full support to the transition team. Whatever support is required—logistical or otherwise—we will provide to facilitate the committee’s work,” she stated.
The idea to establish the University of Ghana Medical Centre originated from the University’s faculty and administration and was initiated during the tenure of the late President John Evans Atta-Mills.
