Asante Kotoko produced a commanding performance to defeat defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars 2–0 at the Baba Yara Stadium on Wednesday night.
The fixture was an outstanding Matchday 2 encounter, rescheduled due to Bibiani Gold Stars’ and Asante Kotoko’s participation in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, respectively.
The Porcupine Warriors started brightly and maintained control throughout the encounter, earning their first victory of the season in front of an ecstatic Kumasi crowd.
The match began with intensity as Kotoko’s midfield trio dictated play, keeping possession and forcing Gold Stars to defend deep.
The early pressure paid off in the 15th minute when Peter Amidu Acquah opened the scoring. He finished neatly after latching onto a clever through ball that split the Bibiani defence.
That goal lifted the tempo inside the stadium as Kotoko pushed for a second, while the visitors struggled to find their rhythm.
Gold Stars had moments of resistance, with Nicholas Mensah leading their forward line and testing Kotoko’s backline a few times.
However, their final pass often lacked precision, and clear chances were rare. As the half wore on, Kotoko looked more comfortable, using the width of the pitch effectively and forcing errors from Bibiani’s defence.
After the break, the home side continued from where they left off. Just five minutes into the second half, Albert Amoah doubled Kotoko’s lead with a composed strike.
The build-up was patient, and Amoah’s finish from close range left the Gold Stars goalkeeper with little chance. That second goal effectively sealed the game as Bibiani struggled to recover.
Kotoko maintained control for much of the second period, showing discipline at the back and composure in midfield.
The few attacking threats from Bibiani were calmly dealt with by the Kotoko defence, marshalled by their experienced centre-backs. Substitute appearances later in the game helped the hosts preserve energy and see out the win without much trouble.
For Bibiani Gold Stars, the defeat marked a disappointing outing. They came into the match full of confidence after a solid start to their campaign, but Kotoko’s quality on the day proved too much to handle.
Their inability to break down Kotoko’s defensive line and lack of creativity in the final third were their biggest weaknesses.
This result continues Kotoko’s strong record against Bibiani, extending their dominance in recent meetings.
It also gives the Porcupine Warriors an early boost in the Ghana Premier League, helping them build momentum as the season unfolds.
