Former aspirant for University of Ghana Student Representative Council (UGSRC) President, Linda Ackah-Mensah has opined that the nomination of Prof. Naana Jane Agyeman as the running mate for the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a stride towards women’s empowerment in Ghana, especially in the political sphere.
Prof. Agyeman was announced as the running mate for the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, for the second time, after a sore loss to their opposition in the last general elections in 2020. For many, including Linda, the potential of a woman as the second in command to the head of the state was a direction towards stronger and more effective women empowerment in the country.
Coincidentally, the announcement was made a day before the globally celebrated International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on 8th March annually. Univers News engaged another woman in politics, Ms. Ackah-Mensah, to share her views on the possible results from the development. She describes the event as a possible path to history for the country.
“I think that selecting Prof Naana Jane as a running mate for the second time, as a major political party leader, signifies a crucial stride for us. It does not only chalk a historical path for us as a country but also reaffirms our commitment to the journey of women’s empowerment,” she said.
Ms. Ackah-Mensah admonished women to shine in whatever field they are in without finding the need to tear down other women in their pursuit of success for fulfillment.
“I always try to think of myself as the change because I have made a commitment to myself that I am not going to tear another woman down just because I know she would take my shine. I understand that the sky is big and there are a lot of stars there. Everybody is characterized by something unique.”
“Today is one of those days that we try to put emphasis that women are not their own enemies and with that mindset, it will go a long way to project how we do our things. I feel like leveraging on everybody’s strengths and weaknesses is how equity really reigns and it gives us a total sum of productivity and progress,” she added.
