University of Ghana basketball team coach, Eric Agyapong Ankamah has commended the players’ outstanding performance on the first day of the inter-hall Basketball tournament.
However, Mr. Eric attributed Mensah Sarbah Hall’s disappointing results to the team’s inexperience, citing that many of the senior players (Level 400s) have graduated, leaving behind a relatively young and inexperienced squad consisting mostly of junior players.
The basketball tournament which took place at the Athletic Oval saw Dr. Hilla Limann Hall dominate Mensah Sarbah Hall with a convincing 26-16 victory in the men’s category.
Limann Hall women’s team secured a crushing 28-6 win over Sarbah Hall in the women’s event.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Univers sports, the veteran coach admitted that the senior players have left a void that the young players are still adjusting to fill.
“I’m only impressed with the kind of performance in the last match between Sarbah and Limann because Sarbah is not in its best shape as compared to the previous years. Almost all the continuing students are out except with the few ones that are in level 200 but I’m impressed with the performance of that particular team. I hope now that we have started the competition, the light will be thrown, the euphoria will come up and we have more players and fans coming out to show their skills and grace the occasion as well”
According to Coach Eric Agyapong, the primary objective of the tournament is to identify and recruit talented players for the university team, with the ultimate goal of building a strong and competitive squad.
“The whole idea of the tournament is to select players to represent the University, it’s not just about a single team standing to represent the university. As they play we pick up
players who are very smart, quick strong, fast and good decision making players with very solid IQ. These are the ones we are looking for to form the university team and then we can play the University Games (GUSA)”. – he added.
