Some chiefs in the Eastern Region have described the recent increase of spousal murder cases recorded in the country as worrying.

The chiefs, which include the Mponua-hene of Akuapem Adukrom, Nana Asare Atakorah III together with other chiefs and Queen Mothers stated that within a period of three months, the country has recorded an increased number of cases of such incidents, calling the situation appalling. They wondered why lovers turned to become enemies who could not settle their issues but ended up killing themselves.

“Couples in the olden days could stay happy in marriage for decades to take proper care of their offspring but the reverse was the case nowadays because partners even forgot that they had ever expressed love for each other but all they could do was to destroy their lives.”

The chiefs together with security agencies expressed concern when the media was addressed today. Women in particular were advised to report any security threats from their spouses to the Traditional leaders and the Police for immediate intervention.

The Mponua-hene further lamented on situations where a spouse murders their partner and also commit suicide for fear of being arrested to face prosecution without thinking about the welfare of the children they were leaving behind.

He therefore appealed to residents in the regions, particularly couples to assist in complementing the efforts of the traditional leaders, the Security agencies and other stakeholders to maintain the prevailing peace in the country.

This, he said, would pave way for holistic and accelerated national progress.
