Electoral Commissioner Madam Jean Mensa has emphasized that the Electoral Commission (EC) believes trust is built on transparency, information sharing, and responsiveness.
She highlighted the importance of providing citizens with facts, information, and evidence regarding all electoral processes.
In her closing remarks at the first-ever televised Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting, which focused on the credibility of the electoral register, Madam Mensa assured Ghanaians that the EC has a potent system in place to organize free, fair, and transparent electoral processes, including the management of the voters’ register.
She informed the political parties and other participants that the EC has maintained transparency throughout the registration exercise and the declaration of results. According to her, the EC has opened its processes to the public, making it the only commission to do so.
Furthermore, Madam Mensa noted that the EC has consistently provided the citizenry with daily infographics related to the registration exercise since 2020, along with regular updates on the number of individuals registered.
“In the conduct of our affairs, we may make mistakes, and we have made some errors that do not go to the heart of the matter and do not affect the credibility of the registration and, for that matter, the election. There are minor errors.”
“It is not to say that we gloss over them, but the good news is that we have been very responsive. We have come out very quickly, issued statements, made corrections, and moved on. We have not hidden the truth, nor have we remained quiet. We have addressed the issues and informed the public that, yes, there are some errors, and here are the corrections. We have provided that information accurately and in a timely manner. So for us, this is the trust that we speak about.”
She declared that the EC does not have anything to hide and has opened to the media all its activities, contrary to allegations of a lack of transparency and accountability.
