Parliament, through the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of two serving ministers and other senior officials who perished in a helicopter crash while on official assignment to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter carrying five passengers and three crew members from Accra to Obuasi went off radar and later crashed, bursting into flames and killing all eight people on board.

In a statement, Speaker Bagbin and the leadership of the House said they received confirmation of the “tragic passing” with profound sadness.

“Parliament is deeply saddened by this news and wishes to express its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and, indeed, the entire Republic,” the statement read.

Among the deceased are Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. Other victims include Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East; and Samuel Sarpong, a Vice Chairman of the NDC and former Mayor of Kumasi.

The three-member crew who also lost their lives were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The officials were en route to Obuasi to launch a newly developed government policy and initiative dubbed the Responsible Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), aimed at sanitising the small-scale gold mining sector in Ghana.

“May the souls of our departed colleagues, who died in service to the Republic, rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
