Former defense minister, Mark Owen Woyongo dies at 74

Former Minister of Defence and Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Mark Owen Woyongo, has passed away at the age of 74.

The announcement of his death was confirmed by Mr. Awini Zinge, the head of the Woyongo Family, in a statement on Thursday, January 18. Mr. Woyongo, who had been facing health challenges, breathed his last on Wednesday, January 17, at the Bank of Ghana Hospital in Accra.

Mark Woyongo served as the MP for Navrongo Central from 2012 to 2016 and officially retired from politics in December 2016, expressing his decision not to seek any political position in the future. He was appointed as the Upper East Regional Minister by the late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2009 and retained in the same position by former President John Dramani Mahama following President Mills’ passing.

In 2013, President Mahama nominated him for the role of Minister for Defence, and subsequently, in 2014, he was nominated for the position of Interior Minister by President Mahama.
