The Guaranty Trust (GT) Bank has handed over a fully refurbished computer science laboratory to the University of Ghana’s Department of Computer Sciences (UGDCS).

The computer science laboratory, which was refurbished with 50 high-capacity functioning computers, was officially handed over by the bank on December 7, 2023, at the Department of Computer Sciences. The facility is envisioned to enhance technology-based teaching and learning within the institution as well as promote cooperation and integration between corporate institutions and education institutions.

Speaking during the official handover ceremony, the Chief Finance Officer of GT Bank, Dr. Caleb Osei encouraged the effective use of the refurbished facility and the bank’s receptiveness for future collaborations.

“I want to officially hand over this beautiful place to the management of the school. We wish you all the best and also make good use of the facilities here, as you stated, we will continue to talk.”

In an interview with Univers News, the Dean of the Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Prof. Sandow Mark Yidana expressed gratitude on behalf of the department to the Bank. He expressed his belief in the initiative’s ability to effectively train students with software development and analytical problem-solving skills which will make them resourceful to the corporate world in solving problems.

“We want to thank them for the efforts, for the relationship, and for identifying with us. You saw through the Hackathon that our students have also developed software programs that will also be very useful to them and that’s not the end.”

“By continuously engaging with us, we are going to help them do their work better because we will help them develop software and help them do what other banks may not be able to do, we will put them at the very top.”

The head of the Department (HOD), Mr. Ebenezer Owusu appealed to corporate institutions to support the department with more modern technological facilities as the available resources were inadequate in equipping students in the competitive industry.

In an exclusive interview with Univers News, the HOD mentioned that the department was still in need of more initiatives and support to equip teaching staff to effectively train and prepare the growing student population of the department.

“We are appealing to industries and certain individuals that they should come to our aid, provide us with more logistics so that we can train more students for Ghana.”

He further expressed his satisfaction with students’ performance during the GT hackathon competition and encouraged them to further develop their hand work.

“The competitors did very well, all these things that they demonstrated are new applications. which I think they can further develop to help GT Bank a lot.”
