The President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana at the University of Ghana (GRASAG-UG), Sadik Abubakari, has called on the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to shift its attention towards engaging university management to regulate the “high fees” charged by private hostel operators on the University of Ghana campus.
His comments follow GTEC’s recent directive to the University of Ghana to halt its fee adjustments for the 2025/2026 academic year and to immediately revert to the previous fee structure.
Speaking on the Campus Exclusive show, Sadik Abubakari stated that such an intervention would significantly ease the financial burden on students.
“GTEC should rather come in and assist us by providing policies that can regulate accommodation fees and charges on campus. A lot of private hostels are killing us, charging increases of over 20 to 30 percent. What is GTEC doing about that on campus?” he said.
