After almost a five-week pause in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) due to the passing of staunch Kotoko fan, Nana Pooley, the league roared back to life with a thrilling matchday 23.

Here’s a summary of the weekend’s action:

Accra Hearts of Oak kicked off the weekend with a 2-0 win over Young Apostles at the University of Ghana Stadium. Michael Awuah’s first-half goal set the tone, and Hamza Issah sealed the victory in the second half. Hearts’ solid possession and defense helped them climb to third place with 36 points.

Medeama bounced back from their disappointing MTN FA Cup performance, securing a 3-1 victory over Bechem United at the Tarkwa T&A Stadium. The win was a morale booster for the team’s campaign.

Berekum Chelsea dominated Accra Lions with a 3-1 victory, leaving Lions struggling with their fifth loss in seven matches and stuck at the bottom of the table.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko came back strong with a 2-0 win over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, moving them to the top of the table, tied with Bibiani GoldStars on 37 points. Kotoko had not featured in a competitive game since February 2 after the tragic passing of Nana Pooley, in their matchday 19 clash against Nsoatreman.

Dreams FC were held to a goal-less draw by Aduana Stars at the Turba Astro Turf, deepening their relegation worries, as they are only three points clear of the drop zone.

Vision FC could not make the most of home advantage, drawing 1-1 with Heart of Lions. Despite the draw, Lions stayed in fourth place, just three points behind leaders Kotoko.

Karela United earned a vital point in their survival fight, drawing 1-1 with Holy Stars at the Naa Sherigu Stadium. It was Karela’s second point in six matches as they aim to avoid relegation.

Bibiani GoldStars secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Nations FC at Duns Park. The win moved GoldStars level with Kotoko at the top of the table, both with 37 points after 20 games. Nations FC, now without a win in three matches, dropped to sixth.

The action wrapped up with Nsoatreman hosting reigning champions Samartex at the Bibiani Duns Park, following the GFA’s decision to temporarily relocate Nsoatreman’s home matches due to the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Nana Pooley.
