The Ghana Gold Board has apprehended 25 individuals, including four Indian nationals, alleged to be involved in the illegal fabrication, trading, and smuggling of gold.

On Monday, November 10, 2025, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board Richard Nunekpeku addressed the media in Accra, revealing that “evidence indicated smuggling routes through neighbouring countries and fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting buyers.”

He further stated that when you are arrested for engaging in illegal gold trading, not even members of the ruling party can save you.

“If you are arrested engaging in these gold-trading activities without a licence or proper authorisation, no party colours, no connections, no call from anybody will save you,” he added.

Mr. Nunekpeku detailed that the individuals were discovered engaging in unauthorised activities related to gold fabrication and jewellery making. The task force seized various items, including gold pieces, receipts, mobile phones, US$112,500, and documents pertaining to unlicensed gold trading.

Richard Nunekpeku emphasised the Board’s firm stance against illegal gold trading and smuggling, urging citizens and stakeholders to verify the legitimacy of gold dealers, buyers, and exporters by consulting the official Gold Board Act or visiting their offices.
