Ghana’s Futsal team is on the brink of being booted out of the ongoing Futsal African Cup of Nations(AFCON) in Morocco after suffering successive defeats.

Ghana, participating in their 2nd Futsal AFCON, secured qualification to the tournament in dramatic circumstances, overturning a 4-0 first-leg deficit to overcome neighbors Ivory Coast 6-2 in the second-leg.

The comeback win propelled Ghana to their first-ever Futsal AFCON since 1996, where they finished as runners-up to Egypt.

However, Ghana’s performance in the 7th edition has been far from convincing and not reminiscent of 1996, where the team scored as many as 42 goals throughout the tournament.

Only Egypt have scored more goals (43) than Ghana (42) in a single edition of the Futsal AFCON.

As indicated by head coach Philip Boakye prior to the commencement of the tournament, the desire of Ghana to win the Futsal Afcon and ultimately qualify for the Futsal World Cup, the performances in the first two games leaves a lot to be desired.

Ghana lost 5-2 to Zambia in the opening game of the tournament before succumbing to an 8-3 defeat to host and defending champions Morocco, leaving the team’s hope of advancing into the semi-final hanging on a thread.

Ghana has conceded the most goals of any team in group A (13), and the second most in the tournament.

Although bottom of group A, Ghana could still make it to the semi-final of the competition by beating 2020 bronze medalist Angola by a huge scoreline and hope Morocco return the favor by thrashing Zambia as well.

Ghana takes on Angola in a must-win group game on Monday, April 15, 2024 at the Salle Ibn Yassine hall.
