Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, have fallen from the 67th position to 68th in April’s World rankings released by football’s governing body, FIFA.

The Black Stars were involved in two crunch international friendly ties in March against Nigeria and Uganda, respectively.

Albeit, the Black Stars put up a more convincing display in the second friendly game against Uganda after losing to Nigeria in the first game 2-1 in Morocco. The spirited 2-2 stalemate against Uganda’s Cranes was inadequate to see the fortunes of the team change in terms of the Coca Cola FIFA World rankings.

Ghana, who were previously ranked 67th after an underwhelming AFCON 2023 campaign which saw the team bow out of the tournament without picking up a victory, are struggling to come by victories in 2024.

The Black Stars have played 6 games in 2024, losing 2, drawing 4 and failing to win any of their games thus far, leaving newly appointed manager Otto Addo with a mountain to climb in his 2nd stint at the helm of affairs for Ghana.

FIFA’s latest rankings consolidates the underlying fact that Ghana has been struggling to come by wins in major tournaments and friendlies, with the team picking up only 1 win in their last 10 matches.

Although the United Arab Emirates has usurped Ghana into 67th place globally, Ghana still remains in 14th position on the African continent behind an unchanged leading pack of Morocco (1), Senegal (2) and Nigeria (3).

Otto Addo would have the opportunity to climb high on the list when the international fixtures come by again in June’s World Cup Qualifiers, with a trip to Mali, Bamako on the cards.
