Independent parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Mr. Abdul Rauf Mumuni Abugri, has proposed a temporary suspension of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy to address infrastructure challenges and improve its overall effectiveness.
Speaking at a Parliamentary Candidates’ Dialogue organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Ayawaso West Wuogon municipality, Mr. Abugri emphasized the need for an urgent review of the policy.
“I propose pausing the Free SHS program for about two years to prioritize infrastructure development. With proper planning, we can reintroduce the program in a way that better meets the needs of students. The current double-track system is ineffective,” he stated.
Mr. Abugri also suggested implementing a shift system in senior high schools to alleviate overcrowding and enhance learning outcomes.
“Introducing morning and evening shifts could maximize the use of school facilities while giving students adequate learning time. The current arrangement, where students alternate every three months, leaves many unprepared for exams and lacking a strong educational foundation,” he explained.
The Parliamentary Candidates’ Dialogue was organized to provide a platform for aspirants to engage with constituents, address pressing issues, and share their policies with constituents.
