The Citizens Coalition for Democratic Accountability and Inclusive Governance (CDD-GHANA) has held a roundtable discussion to deliberate on ‘Public Officers’ Responsiveness to Accountability and Transparency’on 11th, December 2023.

The discussion was held at the CDD-GHANA Conference room. The program delves into the crucial role of citizen participation in fostering inclusive governance and explores strategies for empowering civil to hold governments accountable. They discussed topics related to macroeconomic stability, budgeting, taxes, and the International Monetary Fund.

Speaking at the conference, a senior lecturer at the finance department of the University of Ghana Business School, Prof. Godfred Alufar Bokpin explained that the country needs a sustained macroeconomic stability for at least 15 years to have an economic transformation and productivity increase.

“To have economic transformation and inclusive productivity growth, you need sustained macroeconomic stability for no less than 15 years. We need to look at it because that is a point depending on also institutional reforms and the rest of that’s a point where macro level stability begin to translate to micro and then you see efficiency passing through to private sector level and household level.”

Prof. Bokpin then highlighted the measures needed to revive Ghana’s economy.

“We move along the economic transformation path, we expect that labor will shift from pure agriculture to agribusiness, industry and then service.”

Also present, a lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law, Dr. Abdullah Ali Nakyea, commented on how there is nothing left over for capital investments to boost the economy after paying salaries, wages, and loan interest.

“So after paying wages and salary, paying interest on debts, our money is finished. We have nothing for capital investment, which is the long-term investment that will grow the economy. For example, if you take the PIAC report, they tell you the oil money was used to build their school. In this community, they go on visits and there’s no school, but it’s being spent. That is where our problem is, accountability for some of the spending.”
