Former lecturer and Examination Coordinator at the University of Ghana, Joseph Ecklu, has encouraged WASSCE candidates to explore multiple career paths beyond traditional expectations.

‎Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers, Mr. Ecklu urged students not to define their worth by academic performance alone, stressing the need to embrace flexibility and curiosity across disciplines.

‎“The kind of peer pressure or expectations we had in school — if you were a science student, it was either medicine or nothing. But I’ll tell students that this no longer applies,” he said.

‎He advised students to consider taking exams in other fields they find interesting and to work hard to achieve strong grades without limiting their future to a single path.

‎“Please, even the kind of career structure we have now for education is fine, but challenge yourself in various areas. Take exams in different fields you find interesting. Mix it up. But don’t think that if you don’t get one thing, it’s over.”

‎Also speaking on the show, former Head of the Department of Psychology, Dr. Robert Akuamoah-Boateng, expressed concern about the state of the university’s Psychology Department.

‎He lamented that the department is not given the recognition it deserves, especially when compared to institutions abroad.

‎“You go to most universities and the Department of Psychology is a major department. When I was at NYU, New York University, doing my master’s, our department was in a six-story building,” he said.

‎“You come here, and the department is housed in a ‘chicken coop’ and it’s been that way for ages. It’s so sad. I don’t even think the department should be sharing space with any other department.”

‎His remarks have renewed calls for the University of Ghana to invest in improving the department’s infrastructure.
