The campus radio station of the University of Ghana, Radio Univers (105.7 FM), is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ) to provide students with practical learning opportunities in broadcasting.
The partnership will allow UniMAC-IJ students to use Radio Univers as a training ground, gaining hands-on experience in content production, presentation, and newsroom operations, while also contributing fresh ideas to the station’s growth.
Speaking at a meeting between the two institutions on September 17, 2025, the General Manager of Radio Univers, Dr. Kwaku Botwe, who proposed the collaboration, highlighted its potential impact.
“Radio Univers has always aimed to be more than just a broadcaster. We want to be a training ground. This collaboration is about giving students the chance to move beyond theory and actually practise journalism in a live setting. It will sharpen their skills, boost their confidence, and prepare them for the demands of the media industry,” he said.
The Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies at UniMAC-IJ, Prof. Godwin Etse Sikanku, welcomed the idea, stressing its value for students.
“This is a good opportunity for both stakeholders, as students will gain real-life experience in media. Our students often complain that there aren’t enough platforms where they can practise or intern while studying. Radio Univers comes in to fill that gap. It will serve as a crucial platform where students can apply what they learn and get the exposure they need,” he noted.
Other UniMAC-IJ officials present at the meeting included the Head of the Department of Journalism, Dr. Caroline Aboagye Dacosta; the Head of the Department of Media Studies, Dr. Solace Yawa Asafo; the Programme Coordinator of the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies (FoJMS), Lawyer Kwaku Baah Acheamfor; and the Faculty Officer, Mrs. Perpetua Opoku-Agyemang.
The MoU, once signed, is expected to take effect soon, paving the way for a mutually beneficial partnership between the two institutions.
