Female students in Ghana are increasingly turning to sports betting as a way to cope with economic hardship, according to the Student Representative Council (SRC) President of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Majesty E.K. Ofori.
He stated in an interview on the GTV Breakfast Show that “Some of the ladies engage in betting to some extent even though they may not know how to arrange the odds and other technicalities involved. They bet on the football teams and basketball.”
This is a significant shift from the commonly held perception that sports betting is only for men in Ghana.
Ofori also noted that while sports betting has become a source of income for many students, the recent decision by the government to impose a 10% tax on earnings from lotteries, games of chance, and sports betting at the point of payout has not been well-received by the majority of the youth.
He added that “Betting has become a school of its own, where people are taught how to bet.”
The trend of female students turning to sports betting highlights the impact of economic hardship on Ghanaian youth, particularly on those who are pursuing higher education.
