Amidst a wave of internet disruptions affecting some parts of Africa, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) issued a public announcement attributing the challenges faced in purchasing electricity credits to the ongoing internet disruption issues.

In an attempt to address the situation swiftly, ECG has reassured its customers of concerted efforts with service providers to resolve the issue promptly, underscoring the critical impact of these disruptions on essential services and the daily lives of Ghanaians.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) recently notified the general public about the difficulties encountered in purchasing electricity credits, linking these challenges to internet disruption issues that have affected various services across the country. In a communique released on March 17, 2024, ECG acknowledged the inconvenience faced by customers and assured them of proactive measures being taken to rectify the situation promptly.

The statement also included an apology to affected customers, acknowledging the impact of these disruptions on their daily routines and emphasizing ECG’s dedication to resolving the issue expeditiously.

The backdrop of recent undersea fibre optic cable cuts, affecting mobile network operations since March 14, has significantly contributed to widespread internet outages in Ghana, prompting concerns about connectivity and service reliability.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) further highlighted that multiple subsea cables connecting Ghana to Europe through neighboring countries are currently out of service, prolonging the anticipated resolution timeline for these internet challenges. With a minimum of five-week timeframe for full restoration, stakeholders are working diligently to mitigate disruptions and restore normalcy in internet services across the nation.
