The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a cholera outbreak in the Ada West and Ada East Districts. In a statement released on Monday, October 14, 2024, GHS revealed that the first confirmed case of cholera was recorded in the Ada West District on October 4, 2024.

The statement further mentioned that the patient sought medical attention at a health facility after experiencing symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain a few days following attendance at a funeral.

“The Ghana Health Service confirmed a case of cholera in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra region on 4th October 2024. The person presented to the health facility with vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain a couple of days after attending a funeral in Ada East.”

The situation has since worsened, with nine additional cases reported in the two districts by October 11, raising concerns about the potential spread of the disease.

In response, the GHS has launched several public health measures, including the activation of Public Health Emergency Management Committees (PHEMCs) at national, regional, and district levels. Additionally, a multi-sectoral Public Health Emergency Rapid Response Team (PHERRT) has been mobilized, involving representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and Environmental Health Units in the affected districts.

The GHS has assured the public of its commitment to early detection and swift response to public health emergencies in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other relevant sectors.
