The National Union of Ghana Students, NUGS, has called on the Office of the Presidency, Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service Council to reconsider the dismissal of eights students of the Chiana Senior High School in the Upper East Region for passing derogatory comments against the President.
The Union in a statement issued on January 12, 2023, after condemning the actions of the students called for other punishments to be meted out to them.
The Union believes that Ghana Education Service’s punishment of dismissing the students is heavy and leads to a huge step cutting off the educational future of the students.
“We (NUGS) want to clearly and unequivocally state that the Union condemns every aspect of the actions of these students and believes that such indiscipline acts need a serious look and attention. Such behavior is alien to the culture and more worrying when targeted at an elderly and in this situation the President of the Republic. It is indeed disgraceful and unacceptable.”
“We believe that dismissal is overly heavy and leads to a huge step in truncating the educational future of these young ones. It is even more worrying knowing that due to the Free SHS policy, almost all Senior High Schools are now managed by the Ghana Education Service and such a dismissal is almost an end to their high school education.
“We hereby call on the Ghana Education Service Council, the Ministry of Education and the Presidency to help in the reconsideration of the decision to dismiss these students. Other forms of punishment which still provides deterrence but ensures reformation can be pursued, the statement,” said.
Meanwhile, Africa Education Watch, an educational nonprofit organization has said it supports the decision of the Leaders of the Chiana Senior High School and GES to dismiss the students.
