Ghana Premier League champions, FC Samartex and MTN FA Cup champions, Nsoatreman FC are set to commence their maiden international campaigns on Sunday, August 18, 2024.
Meanwhile Samartex and Nsoatreman FC, will receive $50,000 each for participating in the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, respectively.
In the first leg of the preliminary round, FC Samartex will travel to Cameroon to face Victoria United at the Japoma Stadium while Nsoatreman FC will lock horns with Elect Sport FC of Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The preliminary rounds used to have no prize money. Nevertheless, CAF declared on Friday, August 16, 2024, that $50,000 had been made available to clubs participating in the competition’s initial phase.
“In line with the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) President, Dr Patrice Motsepe’s promise to improve club competitions and provide more financial assistance to clubs, those participating in the Preliminary Stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup will receive USD 50,000 each,” a statement on the CAF website said.
The statement added:
“This is the first time CAF has offered financial assistance to clubs at this stage of the competition. Previously, clubs needed to reach the group stages to be eligible to share the overall prize money.”
There has also been an increase in prize money across the board, with the winner of the Champions League now receiving $4 million, up from the $2.5 million awarded in 2022.
