There are great playmakers, influential captains, and elite creators — and then there is Bruno Fernandes.

On the final day of the 2025/26 English Premier League season, the Manchester United captain etched his name into English football history with a record-breaking display against Brighton.

Fernandes provided the assist for Patrick Dorgu’s opening goal in United’s 3-0 victory, registering his 21st assist of the league campaign — the highest ever recorded in a single Premier League season. In doing so, the Portuguese midfielder surpassed the long-standing record of 20 assists previously shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The historic achievement capped off a remarkable individual campaign for the 31-year-old, coming just days after he was named Premier League Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

For years, Henry’s iconic 20-assist season in 2002/03 appeared untouchable. De Bruyne matched the feat in 2019/20, but Fernandes has now gone one step further, setting a new benchmark for creative excellence in the Premier League era.

True to his importance to Manchester United, Fernandes did not stop at the assist. He also found the back of the net, delivering another commanding performance as Michael Carrick’s side secured Champions League qualification following a strong finish to the season.

Beyond the numbers, Fernandes has been the heartbeat of United’s resurgence. His creativity, leadership, and consistency proved crucial throughout the campaign, particularly in decisive clashes against fellow top-six rivals.

The Portuguese international also finished the season with the most chances created in the league and remained one of the few ever-present figures in a demanding campaign, once again highlighting his durability and influence in midfield.

Since arriving at Old Trafford in January 2020, Fernandes has carried much of Manchester United’s creative burden. This season, however, he elevated his game to another level — combining flair with control, efficiency, and leadership.

With another historic milestone achieved and the FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Bruno Fernandes continues to strengthen his legacy as one of the Premier League’s greatest modern playmakers and one of Manchester United’s most influential captains of the modern era.
