The Member of Parliament for the Akwatia constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been confirmed dead, according to multiple media reports.
The unfortunate news was corroborated by the MP for Walewale, Dr Kabiru Tia Mahama, to the Parliamentary press corps today, July 7.
The late Ernest Kumi, aged 40, was a rising and dynamic young politician in the ranks of the New Patriotic Party, having won the Akwatia seat in the 2024 Parliamentary elections with 19,269 votes against the NDC’s Henry Boakye Yiadom, who polled 17,206 votes.
He had earlier secured his party’s nomination in the 2023 primaries after unseating former MP, Ama Sey of the NPP.
News of his death comes on the back of the Supreme Court voiding his arrest warrant from the High Court obtained in February 2025, following a suit filed against the legitimacy of his win in the 2024 Elections citing him for contempt of Court for holding himself as MP whilst the case was ongoing.
The judicial review found that the arrest warrant was not properly issued and was subsequently struck out in June by the apex court for biased judgment.
He was an alumnus of UPSA, Regional Maritime University, and Mount Crest University, holding degrees in Port and Shipping Administration (2009), an MBA in Corporate Communications (2014), and an LLB (2019).
He served on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee and House committees of Parliament.
The circumstances surrounding his demise have not been disclosed.
