The Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has officially accepted his election as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana.

This marks a historic achievement as the first individual to retain the position across consecutive Parliaments.

In his acceptance speech delivered on the floor of Parliament, Speaker Bagbin expressed profound gratitude for the trust placed in him by Members of Parliament and key stakeholders.

“It is with great humility that I accept the high and privileged honor of being speaker of the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana, having had the same honor to be speaker of the 8th Parliament. I am grateful to the almighty God for His grace and mercies for me to achieve this rare feat. To Him be all the praise and honor,” he stated.

He acknowledged the confidence reposed in him and expressed his appreciation to both the Members of Parliament and the President-elect, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, for their trust in his leadership.

“Honorable members of Parliament elect, I am very grateful for the privilege and confidence you have reposed in me to be speaker and to head this honorable house once more. I also express my gratitude to the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for the trust and confidence in me and my leadership of the house and for recommending my candidature,” Speaker Bagbin noted.

Reflecting on his unique qualifications, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the depth of his legislative and parliamentary experience, which he pledged to leverage to guide the house effectively.

“I came to the speaker of the 8th Parliament with my experience as the longest legislator of the house. I now come to the 9th Parliament with not just that background, but now with the experience of four years of speakership of a very difficult hung Parliament. I promise to bring all these experiences to bear in guiding this house to perform its mandate with efficiency, diligence, and above all, with a sense of being the bulwark of democracy in Ghana.”

In a call to the Ghanaian people, the Speaker urged citizens to remain engaged with Parliament’s work and emphasised the importance of collective efforts in building a better nation.

“To the good people of Ghana who continue to hope for a better Ghana, I urge you to support your Parliament and be interested and engaged with the work of Parliament,” he said.

Speaker Bagbin’s leadership is expected to guide the 9th Parliament in navigating the challenges of a dynamic legislative landscape while promoting democracy and national development.
