President of the Ghana Athletics Federation, Bawah Fuseini, has deemed the just-ended African Senior Championships in Cameroon as a success for Ghana, who swept home 3 medals.

Team Ghana’s 18 contingents across the various track and field events were able to nick 3 medals for their efforts, with the men’s 4x100m team winning gold and Rose Yeboah coming out on top in the women’s high jump.

The 3 medals won by Ghana at the 23rd edition of the meet is an improvement on the 1 won at the previous edition.

This remarkable feat at the seven day meet pleased the athletic Federation President on his remarks on the general assertion of the event, but highlighted some challenges hindering the team’s overall performance.

We are building another team again for the next 10 years, so these athletes we took are fairly young. Majority of them, this was their first appearance at that level. So, they did very well, 2 gold medals, and a couple of other medals is incredible, he said.

If you look at the general performance of the competition, it will not surprise you that Ghana we didn’t pick up any additional qualification there. The condition was very tough, it was raining every day and the organization wasn’t the best, he added.

Ghana’s 4x100m team who qualified for the Olympics at the World Championships in Bahamas was altered for the meet, with Abdul Saminu and Edwin Gadayi coming in for Joseph Paul Amoah and Benjamin Azamati.

Although winning gold in the men’s compartment, Ghana’s 4x100m women team finished second to Nigeria, but the unperturbed President feels Ghana will come good in the near future.

We have dominated the 4×100 and we have really crystalized Ghana to be the number 1 In Africa, when it comes to the male 4x100m. And the female 4×100 is also coming up very strongly. Even though we didn’t pick up another qualification for the Olympics, but the performance was credible and the performance was very good.

The Olympic Games is set to commence on Friday, July 26, 2024.
