Head coach of the black stars Chris Hughton has voiced his support for the forward Inaki Williams who is yet to find the back of the net for the black stars since joining the team.
Williams has played eight times with the national team but has not scored yet and fans are on his back for his disappointing performances.
Hughton believes Inaki Williams brings more to the team than just goals and he is confident that eventually the Athletic Bilbao attacker will start scoring on a more regular basis.
“It is very much part and parcel of the game. What we know about Inaki is that he is a very good player playing in a good team and in a very good league. I think with somebody like Inaki is not all about goals. He plays consistently for his team but I think his contribution in the game. He is a player that makes a lot of runs, he stretches play a bit and sometimes it benefit other players. I think with regards to his goals scoring with the black stars it will come. Sometimes it does not come as quick as what you want, what is more important to us is his contribution to the game and for the team. That is the most important thing,” he said.
The Laliga star has played twenty four matches this season for his club Athletic Bilbao having scored five goals and assisted twice.
Following his abysmal performance in the Qatar 2022 world cup, there has been calls for him to start from the bench and gradually be introduced into the games in order for him to under study the team and adapt to the black stars.
Former black stars head coach Otto Addo started him in all the matches Ghana played at the world cup but failed to make a positive impact hence pressure keep piling on him to make a mark in the team.
Ghana’s next AFCON 2023 qualifying games which comes off in June will be against second placed Central African Republic at home and afterwards travel to face Madagascar in the final game of the qualifiers.
It remains to be seen whether Inaki Williams will make an impact to meet the expectations of Ghanaians with regards to his performance in the national team.
