Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has said that she is pleased with the steady progress of work on the facilities for the African games at the University of Ghana.
The Local Organization Committee of the African Games, Accra 2023 conducted an inspection of the facilities for the games at UG campus.
The officials inspected the Rugby pitch, warm-up pitch, games village, the diaspora halls and the University of Ghana stadium.
This inspection exercise was attended by the minister of youth and sports, Mustapha Ussif, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and the Chairman of the LOC, Dr Kwaku Ofosu Asare.
After touring the facilities for inspection, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo expressed delight at the progress of work on all the facilities and expects the edifice to meet international standards before the end of the year.
In an exclusive interview with Univers Sports after the tour, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo expressed optimism about the facilities being ready on time for the games.
“it’s important that we did this tour at some point, UG is the key partner organizing these games. I was concerned that this wasn’t going to happen and it had implications for us also with regards to setting and readjusting our academic calendar but I have been quite impressed with what I have seen this morning. I see that work is progressing steadily and I believe that when we keep up at this pace by October/November we should be able to get all the international certifications that we need to get and then what will rarely be left will be aesthetics,” She said
The Vice-Chancellor also indicated that she is putting measures in place to ensure the facilities earmarked for the games are kept in good shape.
“Right here on this field, we have noticed the quality of the grass which we have pointed out to the contractors and they have assured us that they are going to work on. On the other hand, too we are concerned with regards to refurbishment going on within the student hostels and for the students, in the meantime keep these facilities as they are expected to be kept before the start of the games. And so we have already planned meetings with the various hall tutors and I have just indicated that we should include the student leaders so that we directly interact with them, so we ensure that the facility is being put in place and they are kept very well before, during and after the games” She added.
Ghana will welcome the rest of the 54 African countries for the 13th edition of the African Games, which will include 5,000 top athletes, 3,000 technical officials, journalists, and some retired athletes for the multisport event from March 8- March 24, 2024.
