The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon roared their way to January’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament with a convincing 3-0 victory over Burundi last night at Garoua, Cameroon.

Cameroon went into the game against Burundi needing a victory to ensure their participation in the 34th edition of the Total African Cup of Nations.

The Indomitable Lions were buoyed by the return of goalkeeper, Andre Onana, who had previously retired temporarily from the national set-up due to an altercation between himself and Head Coach Rigobert Song during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Cameroon were put on the back foot for large periods of the first half but Onana was at hand to constantly repel waves of attacks from Burundi.

Onana managed to keep Cameroon in the game and in the running for a spot at Ivory Coast with series of world class saves, keeping the match scoreless at the interval.

It was the Lions who drew first blood after the recess through Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.

Mbeumo latched onto a loose ball from the Namibian back line to put the host in control.

Christopher Wooh added a second from a corner kick in the 59th minute.

The game was finally put to bed by the Garoua native, Vincent Aboubakar.

He capitalized on a howler from the Namibian back line to round off goalkeeper, Onesime Rukundo and place the ball into a gaping goal.

Cameroon sealed qualification from group C with 7 points; Namibia qualified along side Cameroon with 5 points and Burundi finished bottom with 4 points.

The Indomitable lions will be making their 20th African Cup of nations appearance in La Côte D’Ivoire in January.

Meanwhile, here is a look at the countries qualifying for the AFCON 23 in January next year.
