Senegal beat Sudan 3–1 to reach AFCON 2025 quarter-finals

Senegal booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after securing a 3–1 victory over Sudan on Saturday, January 3, in a match marked by intensity, emotion, and moments of quality.

The Teranga Lions were forced to overturn an early setback, relying on a decisive brace from Pape Gueye to assert their dominance, while Sudan exited the tournament with pride following a courageous performance led by goalscorer Aamir Abdallah.

The match began at a frenetic pace, with Sudan stunning the favourites in the 6th minute.

Aamir Abdallah capitalised on a defensive lapse to finish calmly inside the box, handing the Sudanese an early and unexpected lead.
The goal energised Sudan, who defended with discipline and looked dangerous on the counterattack.

Senegal gradually imposed their experience and control, dominating possession and applying sustained pressure in midfield.

Their equaliser arrived in the 29th minute when Pape Gueye unleashed a powerful long-range strike that beat the goalkeeper and restored parity.

As halftime approached, Senegal increased the tempo, sensing signs of defensive fatigue from Sudan.
Their persistence paid off in stoppage time of the first half, as Pape Gueye struck again, finishing off a well-worked move to give the West African giants a 2–1 lead at the break.

The second half saw Sudan push forward with determination in search of an equaliser.

Despite their spirited efforts, Senegal’s organised defence and intelligent game management limited clear-cut chances and kept the Sudanese at bay.

Senegal later sealed the victory through Ibrahim Mbaye, putting the result beyond doubt and confirming their progression to the last eight.

The result reinforces Senegal’s status as one of the strongest contenders in the tournament, they will  face a tough contest on Friday January 9, in the quarter-finals finals when they come up against Mali.

Meanwhile, Sudan bow out with credit after a competitive and fearless display.
