Ahead of the African Basketball Festival(ABF), head coach for the basketball Team Ghana, Albert Ato Sam has indicated that he has identified some young prospects for the team in the University of Ghana and other tertiary institutions.

The African Basketball Festival which is slated for December 15 till December 18 comes off at the Bukom Arena, with the competition set to fuse music, fashion, sports and entertainment. Rite Sports and Beyond the Return are the overseers of the running and planning of the event.

The competition is set to feature 8 countries who will lock horns for the ultimate prize, of which team Ghana is a representative. Although the penultimate game on the third and final day is a much anticipated battle between old foes, University of Ghana (UG) and Accra Technical University (ATU), Coach Ato Sam revealed that he has been actively in the hunt to identify top talents from the various tertiary institutions to boost his squad and significantly improve Ghana’s chances of competing against the opposing countries in the upcoming games.

He was speaking in an engagement with Univers Sports.

“I’ve checked the schools and everything and I’ve seen UG and ATU. I’ve identified a lot of players there that I know are potential players there that could represent the country. Even as we talk right now, we have a few of them that I know can easily represent the country,” he said.

Whilst remarking how the University of Ghana has contributed tremendously to the growth of basketball in Ghana, handing players to the national side in contemporary times. Coach Ato Sam lauded the various tertiary institutions for the active participation of the students in team Ghana.

“On the list of players that we have, I think we have one guy that is from UG in the list already. So I believe we’ve done a lot; the basketball sport in the schools are doing very well, and I’m sure given more support and time, we’ll get a lot of them representing and doing well for [Ghana].”

The countdown to the mega Basketball showdown continues with the competition just a fortnight away.
